Daily Prayer - 2013-10-24

Presence

Lord, you are always there
waiting for me.
May I never be too busy to
find time to spend in your presence.

Freedom

Lord, I pray for your gift of freedom.
May your Holy Spirit
guide those in power to work for
equality for all your people.

Consciousness

At this moment Lord I turn my thoughts to you.
I will leave aside my chores and preoccupations.
I will take rest and refreshment in your presence Lord.

The Word of God

Luke 12:49-53

Jesus said to the crowds, "I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Ponder a moment on the image of ‘fire’. Jesus uses it in a negative way; it’s not about cooking or warmth. It’s about danger, panic, destruction; lighting a fire under somebody, apparently under a family
  • Jesus often uses shocking overstatements to convey a truth. Could this be such an example?
  • Does a choice to follow Jesus always involve danger, panic, destruction? Or is it more the case that sometimes there is some element of these?
  • Maybe you feel different about this.

Conversation

Dear Lord, stay by my side always.
Gain for me a trusting heart.
Thank you for loving me.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
