Daily Prayer - 2013-09-24

I slow myself down for a moment, and try to realise that God is present.
To me. Here and now. He is in present in what I do,
in the people that I meet, and the situations I find myself in daily.
How can I make this reality real for myself?

I need to close out the noise, to rise above the noise;
The noise that interrupts, that separates,
The noise that isolates.
I need to listen to God again.

I exist in a web of relationships - links to nature, people, God.
I trace out these links, giving thanks for the life that flows through them.
Some links are twisted or broken: I may feel regret, anger, disappointment.
I pray for the gift of acceptance and forgiveness.

The Word of God

Luke 8:19-21

Then Jesus' mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you." But he said to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • A Jew is one whose mother is a Jew; a Christian is one who has been baptised and believes that Jesus is the Son of God and is a committed follower of his. There is no such thing as a born Christian; one can be born into a Christian family and the family may well see that one becomes a disciple of Christ and so become a real not just a nominal Christian. Discipleship, not family, determines whether one is or is not Christian. Although St. Luke follows St. Mark and St. Matthews, he gives a different sense to the Lord’s words.
  • It is worth getting your New Testament and reading the three accounts of this incident (Lk. 8: 19-21 Mt.12:46-50, Mk. 3: 31-35). Luke does not contrast the natural family to the family of disciples. There is simply praise for his mother and brothers: ‘my mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice’. In other words, they are disciples.
  • This change marks a development of Mary’s portrayal in the New Testament from receiving no mention in Paul’s writings, through her prominence in the infancy narratives to her iconic status at the foot of the Cross in John’s gospel.

Dear Jesus, I can open up my heart to you.
I can tell you everything that troubles me.
I know you care about all the concerns in my life.
Teach me to live in the knowledge
that you who care for me today,
will care for me tomorrow and all the days of my life.

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Prayer for peace:

Following days of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Pope Francis called on Christians around the world to fast and pray for peace in Eastern Europe this coming Ash Wednesday.
“I invite everyone to make March 2, Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting for peace, I encourage believers in a special way to devote themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace protect the world from the folly of war.” Pope Francis, 25/02/2022

If you appreciated the daily prayer or have any suggestions or insights we will be glad to hear from you.
