Daily Prayer - 2013-07-02

Presence

“Be still and know that I am God” Lord, may your spirit guide me to seek Your Loving presence more and more. For it is there I find rest and refreshment from
this busy world.

Freedom

Lord, you created me to live in freedom.
May your Holy Spirit guide me to follow you freely.
Instil in my heart a desire
To know and love you more each day.

Consciousness

In God's loving presence I unwind the past day,

starting from now and looking back, moment by moment.

I gather in all the goodness and light, in gratitude.

I attend to the shadows and what they say to me,

seeking healing, courage, forgiveness.

The Word of God

Matthew 8:23-27

And when Jesus got into the boat, his disciples followed him. A windstorm arose on the sea, so great that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him up, saying, "Lord, save us! We are perishing!" And he said to them, "Why are you afraid, you of little faith?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a dead calm. They were amazed, saying, "What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?"

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Note the contrasts here. There is the terror of the disciples and the composure of Jesus who is asleep! There is the chaos of the storm and the ‘dead calm’ which follows after the intervention of Jesus. He shows complete trust in the protection of God, whereas the disciples are seen to be ‘of little faith’. What about me?
  • Only God has power over the natural forces of the sea. But Jesus demonstrates that he has access to that same power, which hints at his divinity. Have there been occasions in my own life when I invoked the Lord’s help and he restored peace and calm to my troubled waters?

Conversation

Begin to talk to Jesus about the piece of scripture you have just read. What part of it strikes a chord in you? Perhaps the words of a friend - or some story you have heard recently - will slowly rise to the surface of your consciousness. If so, does the story throw light on what the scripture passage may be trying to say to you?

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen
