Daily Prayer - 2013-07-01

Presence

Dear Jesus, as I call on you today I realise that I often come asking for favours.
Today I'd like just to be in your presence.
Let my heart respond to Your Love.

Freedom

There are very few people

who realise what God would make of them

if they abandoned themselves into his hands,

and let themselves be formed by his grace. (Saint Ignatius)

I ask for the grace to trust myself totally to God's love.

Consciousness

In God's loving presence I unwind the past day,

starting from now and looking back, moment by moment.

I gather in all the goodness and light, in gratitude.

I attend to the shadows and what they say to me,

seeking healing, courage, forgiveness.

The Word of God

Matthew 8:18-22

Now when Jesus saw great crowds around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. A scribe then approached and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." Another of his disciples said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." But Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • The scribes were largely educated and earnest people but Jesus called them to something more. Here, he seems to offer a caution to an enthusiastic follower and, to the one who seems to be preoccupied by a matter of importance, Jesus poses a question. Why should I be surprised when my discipleship is not easy? True prayer will always call me beyond my own interests and lead me to light.
  • Lord you constantly challenge me. I will try to hear your voice in what unsettles me.

Conversation

How has God's Word moved me? Has it left me cold? Has it consoled me or moved me to act in a new way? I imagine Jesus standing or sitting beside me, I turn and share my feelings with him.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.
