Daily Prayer - 2013-05-11

Presence

My soul longs for your presence, Lord.
When I turn my thoughts to You,
I find peace and contentment.

Freedom

Lord, like Saint Ignatius, I offer you my memory, understanding,
My entire will.
All I ask for in return is your love and your grace,
That’s enough for me.

Consciousness

Conscious of your presence, Lord,
I look over my recent past.
Let me be honest with myself about how I’ve been
And what I’ve done,
Because I know you love truth in the heart
And accept me just as I am.

The Word of God

John 16:23-28

Jesus said to his disciples, "Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. "I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but will tell you plainly of the Father. On that day you will ask in my name. I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and am going to the Father."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus endeavours to get across to us that God is so loving that there is nothing that God will not grant us - if it is for our good and the good of humanity. There is nothing more that God wants for us than our true happiness – the fullness of joy for us. Jesus reassures us that He mirrors the Father exactly in this way, and that there is nothing that would more please the Father than to trust in His unconditional love. His whole person is coming into the world to mirror this love of the Father for us, and now that His mission is about to be fulfilled, He returns to the Father.
  • Imagine God asking you the question “Would you be willing to trust that I love you with an everlasting love?” and notice how you respond.
  • "See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands" (Isaiah 49:16).

Conversation

To communicate we don’t always need to talk.
Can I imagine myself sitting quietly with Jesus?
I looking silently at him and He at me.
How do I feel?

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
