Daily Prayer - 2013-05-10

Presence

"Be still and know that I am God."
Lord, Your words lead us to the
calmness and greatness of Your Presence.

Freedom

Thank you for the gift of freedom, Lord.
Grant that I may always choose to follow You.
Keep me ever mindful of your ways.
Of your love and concern for all people.

Consciousness

How wonderful it is to be able
to enter into your presence Lord.
No matter what time it is.
No matter which land I am in.
I need only to speak your name.

The Word of God

John 16:20-23

Jesus said, 'Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. When a woman is in labor, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. On that day you will ask nothing of me. Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.'

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Every woman who has given birth to a child can bear witness to the truth of what Jesus says here – that once the child is born, relatively all the pain of giving birth is forgotten, so great is the joy of bringing a child into the world. And yet this joy pales in comparison with the joy of finally fully falling into the everlasting arms of God’s love, a joy that can never be taken from us – where nothing is denied to us by God.
  • Do you trust that God is silently planning for you in love? Speak to God in your heart noticing how Jesus says “if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you”.

Conversation

I begin to talk to Jesus about the piece of scripture I have just read.
What part of it strikes a chord in me? Perhaps the words of a friend - or some story I have heard recently - will slowly rise to the surface in my consciousness. If so, does the story throw light on what the scripture passage may be trying to say to me?

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
