Daily Prayer - 2013-03-19

Dear Jesus, today I call on you in a special way.
Mostly I come asking for favours.
Today I'd like just to be in Your presence.
Let my heart respond to Your Love.

If God were trying to tell me something, would I know?
If God were reassuring me or challenging me, would I notice?
I ask for the grace to be free of my own preoccupations
and open to what God may be saying to me.

Dear Lord help me to be always
aware of the important things in life.
To care for those around me.
To seek your presence in all I meet.

The Word of God

Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.' When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • Mary was carrying a baby in her, as she was about to marry Joseph. When he was about to break off from her, an angel of the Lord told him in a dream not to do so. The message given to him was unique and extraordinary: the child in her womb was conceived by the Holy Spirit. Joseph must have sensed immediately that he too was being called to a special undertaking.
  • Joseph was asked to take care of Mary and her child. The one to be born had a divine mission – to save his people from their sins. Joseph must have realised that he too had a special part in all this. He obeyed without hesitation, and we can presume with joy. He took Mary, this wonderful woman, as his wife. What a privilege!

God’s Word is always fruitful.
How is it touching me now
As I reflect on what I have just prayed?
Do I feel comforted?
Do I feel challenged?

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
