Daily Prayer - 2013-02-09

Presence

I pause for a moment

and reflect on God's life-giving presence

in every part of my body, in everything around me,

in the whole of my life.

Freedom

"Leave me here freely all alone
In cell where never sunlight shone
should no one ever speak to me
This golden silence makes me free."
Part of a poem written by a prisoner at Dachau concentration camp

Consciousness

Knowing that God loves me unconditionally, I look honestly over the last day, its events and my feelings.
Do I have something to be grateful for?
Then I give thanks. Is there something I am sorry for?
Then I ask forgiveness.

The Word of God

Mark 6:30-34

The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • A picnic with the Lord! The lives of the disciples are centred on Jesus. What he thinks about what their work matters enormously to them. Does my life centre on him in the same way? Do I chat with him about what I have done and what I might do about emerging situations? Am I intimate with him? Do we picnic together?
  • Sacred Space gives us the opportunity to share with him and listen to his responses. Meeting him even for these short moments provides an oasis which refreshes us in our labours. We can see Sacred Space as God providing a quiet place where we can rest a while with the Lord. Then, like Jesus, we can better look after those in need.

Conversation

Begin to talk to Jesus about the piece of scripture you have just read. What part of it strikes a chord in you? Perhaps the words of a friend - or some story you have heard recently - will slowly rise to the surface of your consciousness. If so, does the story throw light on what the scripture passage may be trying to say to you?

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen
