Daily Prayer - 2013-01-24

Presence

To be present is to arrive as one is and open up to the other.
At this instant, as I arrive here, God is present waiting for me.
God always arrives before me, desiring to connect with me
even more than my most intimate friend.
I take a moment and greet my loving God.

Freedom

I try to let go of any prejudices and narrow mindedness
That may be clouding my vision at this present moment.
I hand them over to God’s merciful care,
So I can pray in freedom at this time.

Consciousness

How am I really feeling? Lighthearted? Heavy-hearted?
I may be very much at peace, happy to be here.
Equally, I may be frustrated, worried or angry.
I acknowledge how I really am. It is the real me that the Lord loves.

The Word of God

Mark 3:7-12

Jesus departed with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him; hearing all that he was doing, they came to him in great numbers from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the region around Tyre and Sidon. He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him; for he had cured many, so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him. Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and shouted, "You are the Son of God!" But he sternly ordered them not to make him known.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • This reading is a summary of the many activities that constitute the ministry of Jesus. Preaching, healing, and exorcism are highlighted. The setting is the Lake of Galilee, a familiar scene in the gospel narrative. For many contemporary pilgrims to the Holy Land this is their favourite place. This is where they feel closest to Jesus.
  • By naming some of the locations from which “great numbers” travelled to meet Jesus, Mark emphasises how his reputation has grown. The named places represent the north, south, east, and west. They are centres with large Jewish populations, even though Tyre and Sidon are in Gentile territory. But these “great numbers” are a drop in the ocean compared to the number of Christians today. We can legitimately speak of a World Church.

Conversation

Do I notice myself reacting as I pray with the Word of God?
Do I feel challenged, comforted, angry?
Imagining Jesus sitting or standing by me,
I speak out my feelings, as one trusted friend to another.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
