Matthew 9:32-38

The Word of God

After they had gone away, a demoniac who was mute was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the one who had been mute spoke; and the crowds were amazed and said, 'Never has anything like this been seen in Israel.' But the Pharisees said, 'By the ruler of the demons he casts out the demons.' Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.'

    • I sometimes feel harassed and helpless as I become aware of the many needs around me: the media that tell me of threats to security also offer me many solutions. I allow myself to be compassionate as Jesus was. I think of how he looks on me with love, wanting to shepherd me, asking me to listen to his voice and to lead me to peace and happiness.

    • ‘When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless…’ Surely ‘compassion’ is the hallmark of Jesus? Such is his humanity that he feels deeply for the people who are lost, like sheep without a shepherd.
    • To what extent am I like Jesus in my attitude towards others, especially the poor and the needy? Or am I dismissive and judgemental towards others, as are the Pharisees in today’s gospel? Lord, please give me something of your genuine humanity and compassion in all my relations with others.

    • Jesus faces two enemies, the demons who make people dumb and the Pharisees who accuse him of being a demon himself. The crowds, on the other hand, are amazed at the authority he shows, with his profound compassion and his power that could only come from God.
    • Jesus wants us to pray for more labourers to bring in the plentiful harvest. The lack of labourers, then as now, is a problem, but it is also an opportunity and a challenge. Do I play my part in bringing in the Lord’s harvest? Or do I leave that to others?

    • Jesus saw people searching for meaning in their lives, for the truth that he spoke. He knows that this is part of life, and also that people look in the wrong place for meaning. We look for fullness in life and get caught into its superficiality. We look for faith and hope and get caught into trivialities. Jesus offers the way that guides our steps, the truth that enlightens our minds and the life that gives love which lasts forever.
    • Jesus cured every disease and sickness. I bring all aspects of my life to my prayer, knowing that God wants to bring the healing too.
    • I may recall times when I have been too busy or too stressed. I picture Jesus looking with compassion on me then, keeping alive in his heart God's desire for me that I had lost sight of. I linger in Jesus compassionate gaze.
    • I can be a labourer in the harvest by being compassionate to those around me. I pray for the gentleness, wisdom and courage that I may need.
