Matthew 5:43-47

Jesus said to the crowds, "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?"

    • Most of Jesus’ listeners despised tax collectors and gentiles. Yet He tells them that, if they do not love their enemies they are no better than those whom they despise. It’s as tough a lesson now as it was then. In all honesty, is there no one whom I despise?
    • Why should we love our enemies and pray for our persecutors? We are to do this because God does it, and we are called to be God’s children. As his children we are commanded to be ’perfect’. Perfection consists in loving as God loves, without exceptions or conditions. I beg for the grace to do this.

    • God’s love is unconditional. It extends to enemies. That challenges neat categories and personal preferences that can hold so much sway in life. It is only with his heart that we can love in a way that is humanly impossible.
    • Holiness means imitating God and trying to be as generous as we can. We are to act as God does in loving all, just or unjust, good or bad. His mercy and graciousness is radical, disproportionate, and outrageous. Is mine perhaps a little more cautious?

    • Love of enemies is special to Christianity. It is the most difficult thing in the world, and only the example of Jesus in the Passion makes it possible for us. If we don’t love our enemies we are not yet inside the Kingdom of God.
    • God, your love is love of another kind to ours. You simply love everyone, good and bad. You love me that way too! Nothing I do would make you love me less. If I could believe that, I would have some hope of loving others in the same way.

    • Where do I stand, Lord, in face of your invitation to become godlike in my kindliness? When I am struggling to survive in a hostile world, trying to care for a family, and earn my living, how do I keep my heart free of annoyances, resentments, even hatreds? Only by keeping my eyes on you, and being patient with my falls from grace.
