Matthew 13:47-53

‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. ‘Have you understood all this?’ They answered, ‘Yes.’ And he said to them, ‘Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.’ When Jesus had finished these parables, he left that place.

    • A hoarder gathers junk and holds onto what has no further use; a wise householder, on the other hand, keeps what may be of value to hand. When your prayer calls things out of memory, consider how you turn over the past: are you seeing it as you saw it before or are you discovering new evidence of God’s abiding care?

    • Jesus speaks in parables, a form of storytelling, to help his words come to life for his followers in everyday language. Many of the disciples were fishermen who spent their lives casting out their nets to draw in the fish. They could understand the method of separating the ‘good’ from the ‘bad’.
    • Father, as we weave our way through life, help us to discern what is pleasing to you and how we can reach for the heavens in our daily communion with our brothers and sisters. Help us to learn from our experience of life what helps us live lovingly.

    • Will judgment be a final division of good and bad? The Early Church held the hope that somehow, by the goodness of God, we will all be saved. I must work and pray for this.
    • Life is constantly changing: so are we, and so is the Church. Sometimes we have little patience with old ways and customs. But the storehouse of the kingdom contains many treasures. Whatever truly helps people to respond to God is good and not to be despised.

    • Many parables show us that the kingdom of heaven involves both good and bad mixed together. I pray for the patience and tolerance that I need to live with those who differ from me.
    • I pray that I might be like the scribe that Jesus mentions, able to employ all my resources to their best end.

    • *A Prayer of Saint Ignatius Loyola* Take Lord, and receive, my memory, my understanding, my entire will. All that I am, all that I have are you gift to me. I now return them to you. Give me only your love and your grace, with these I am rich enough, and desire no more.
    • There's a mixture of good and bad in all of us. The church is a mixture of good and bad also. We simply pray to respond to goodness in our desires and in our activities, and ask the forgiveness and help of Jesus where we fail.
