Matthew 13:36-43

Jesus said, 'The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!'

    • Where there is life, there is always hope of redemption and of the triumph of good over evil. The ultimate victory of goodness and love, truth and justice will be accomplished by the Son of Man at ‘the harvest at the end of the age’.
    • Lord, take possession of my ‘field’ – my heart and my life – so that ‘the evil one’ may not have any power over me. Help my unique light to shine out in the world, just like ‘the righteous who shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father’.

    • The good seed is sown in the world as it is. There is no need to wait until things are better, I can do whatever good I can do right now.
    • Like a seed growing towards the light, I allow myself to dwell in the presence of God who loves me. I still any voices that are not for my growth, wanting only to respond to the word that God speaks to me.

    • Jesus is willing to keep teaching the disciples over and over again. He knows they are slow learners of discipleship and so are we, because discipleship is heart-knowledge. We can learn off the words of Jesus but miss their meaning as they have no effect in our lives. We can sing the song and never feel the melody, or dance the steps and miss the rhythm. Jesus is always willing to explain to the willing heart what he says and who he is.
    • Weeds and wheat all grow together and, at the harvest, are separated. In each of us strengths and weaknesses of personality exist together, as do our goodness and faults. God sees us whole, and looks on the total field. All are growing together and too much emphasis on faults means we may forget our goodness. In prayer, let's offer the good to God for strengthening and what is weak for healing and forgiveness.
