    • The woman’s comment drew attention to Jesus’ mother, suggesting why she was blessed. His answer invites us all to be blessed as Mary was by receiving God’s Word in our hearts and living in its light.

    • Jesus must have been delighted to hear this praise of his mother. But he uses the occasion to reveal another dimension of blessedness, that of the hearers of the word of God. This means that the Sacred Space community is deeply blessed by God!
    • Jesus, I thank you for enfolding me in your blessing. The angel said to Mary that she was blessed, and I am also. Who am I, then? I am the blessed of God. Open my ears and remain with me always so that I may live out God’s word in my life.

    • How close is the spiritual relationship between Jesus and his disciples, when it even surpasses the natural, biological relationship between him and his mother! What a great and wonderful dignity we possess as Christians.
    • Such a natural and beautiful response on the part of the woman in the crowd to Jesus! She expressed her overriding feeling very much from a feminine and maternal perspective. Is Jesus so real and fresh for me that I might sometimes respond to him in a truly spontaneous and personal way?

    • Jesus’ answer does not diminish his mother Mary, but embraces her and all others who hear and obey the word of God. Do I accept that I am included too in his blessing?
    • Prayer of praise is an ancient and beautiful tradition. Do I praise much? I too can offer my voice in praise of God’s wonderful working in my life.

    • This woman intrigues me. Was she barren? Had she a handicapped child? Her cry is so spontaneous, so charged with love and admiration for the person of Jesus, I would love to have been in her shoes. Jesus turns the compliment, and refers in a subtle and beautiful way back to his mother. Mary is blessed above all because, as Elizabeth said at the visitation, Mary believed God's word and made herself his handmaid.
    • People often broke out in spontaneous praise of Jesus, like when he spoke well or healed people. The woman in question here got so excited that she praised Jesus' mother. Jesus' reply says what most praises him and God: the person who lives by the word of God and puts this word into action. In this way the word becomes flesh every day among us.
