Luke 10:1-6

The Word of God

After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house!' And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you.

    • In this reading Jesus gives us something important to pray for. He tells us to ask God to send out into our world people who will preach his Word. How badly we need to ask the Lord to supply labourers for the Gospel today. Does he want to send me as one of them?
    • Jesus tells the disciples to ‘greet no one on the road’. They are not to be distracted from their purpose. How often do I welcome idle gossip to avoid doing what I know I should be doing?

    • Today we celebrate the feast of the gospel-writer, Saint Luke. We see in this passage a strong sense of mission. I am one of the seventy who are sent out to prepare the way for the Lord. I must witness in my life to Christ Jesus and his message. Do I see this calling not only as a duty but as a great privilege?
    • There is also here a strong note of detachment and trust in divine providence. I need to remind myself that it is the Lord’s work that I am about and that I need to trust continually in the help and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Do I get obsessed about specific outcomes? If so, I ask the Lord for freedom of heart.

    • Luke is the evangelist with a universal view. Did he hope for a day when every nation of the world would come to know the Good News offered by Jesus? The sending out of the seventy to every town and place tells us that no one is outside the embrace of God. Lord, you invite me to be with you, on mission. Grant me a heart that is free and uncluttered. May I travel light, and avoid those entanglements that do not lead to life. Help me to remain focused on you and to spread your Good News.

    • First say: /Peace to this house!/ You send us like lambs, Lord, vulnerable, unthreatening, with no weapons, no resources, offering simply the gift of peace and of healing. But my temptation is always to look for more resources, more courses, more back-up. Yours is a hard lesson to learn. I must come back to it again and again.
