John 6:47-51

Jesus said to the crowd, "Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."

    • When he talks about ‘living water’ and, now, about ‘living bread’, Jesus encourages us to think about lasting sources of life and nourishment. I recall the question of the prophet Isaiah (55:2), as he reminds us not to spend our money or efforts on what is of passing value. Help me, Lord, to look with honesty at how I spend my resources and energies.

    • This sixth chapter of St John lifts my heart with the thought of the Eucharist. Here is Jesus sharing his life with us. My daily Eucharist nourishes me, strengthens me for the struggles that fill my day, nurtures a life in me that will not end with my death.
