Daily Prayer - 2019-01-09

Presence

Dear Lord, help me to be open to you
for this time as I put aside the cares of this world.
Fill my mind with your peace, Your Love.

Freedom

Everything has the potential to draw forth from me a fuller love and life.
Yet my desires are often fixed, caught, on illusions of fulfillment.
I ask that God, through my freedom may orchestrate my desires
in a vibrant loving melody rich in harmony.

Consciousness

We are all pilgrims on a journey to you, Lord.
May we contemplate your time on earth,
and, with Your help, follow in your footsteps.

The Word of God

Mark 6:45-52

Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. After saying farewell to them, he went up on the mountain to pray. When evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. When he saw that they were straining at the oars against an adverse wind, he came towards them early in the morning, walking on the sea. He intended to pass them by. But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid." Then he got into the boat with them and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • I note the contrast between the disciples “out on the sea” without Jesus and Jesus “alone on the land”, gone up on the mountain to pray. They learn that they are not forsaken, that the Lord watches over them unseen. I should never be afraid of any danger, knowing that Jesus watches over me with loving compassion.
  • I join Jesus at prayer on the hillside. Had the adulation of the crowd disturbed him? Is it silent contemplation, communion with his Father and the Holy Spirit? Does he use words? Lord, teach me to pray.
  • They still do not understand who Jesus is. They miss the meaning of the signs he has given.

Conversation

How has God's Word moved me?
Has it left me cold?
Has it consoled me or moved me to act in a new way?
I imagine Jesus standing or sitting beside me,
I turn and share my feelings with him.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen
