Daily Prayer - 2018-06-16

Presence

"Be still and know that I am God".
Lord, may your spirit guide me to seek
Your Loving presence more and more.
For it is there I find rest and refreshment from this busy world.

Freedom

Dear Lord, instil in my heart
the desire to know and love you more.
May I respond to your will for my life.

Consciousness

I exist in a web of relationships - links to nature, people, God.
I trace out these links, giving thanks for the life that flows through them.
Some links are twisted or broken: I may feel regret, anger, disappointment.
I pray for the gift of acceptance and forgiveness.

The Word of God

Matthew 5:33-37

Jesus said to the crowds, "Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.' But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let your word be 'Yes, Yes' or 'No, No'; anything more than this comes from the evil one."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus wants his followers to be people of their word.
  • If what you say is what you do, then there is no need "to swear falsely" or to swear at all.
  • Personal integrity is increasingly a virtue demanded of leaders: when you’re not breaking the rules yourself, you see more clearly what’s right and what’s wrong and you have the courage to act against it in the workplace.
  • A Chilean church group re-wrote the Beatitudes: “Happy are the pure in heart; not those who act like angels but those whose life is transparent, for they shall see God.”

Conversation

How has God's Word moved me?
Has it left me cold?
Has it consoled me or moved me to act in a new way?
I imagine Jesus standing or sitting beside me,
I turn and share my feelings with him.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen
