Daily Prayer - 2018-02-18

Presence

As I begin this prayer, God is here.
Around me, in my sensations, in my thoughts and deep within me.
I pause for a moment, and become aware
of God's life-giving presence.

Freedom

Lord, may I never take the gift of freedom for granted.
You gave me the great blessing of freedom of spirit.
Fill my spirit with Your peace and Your joy.

Consciousness

How am I really feeling? Lighthearted? Heavy-hearted?
I may be very much at peace, happy to be here.
Equally, I may be frustrated, worried or angry.
I acknowledge how I really am. It is the real me that the Lord loves.

The Word of God

Mark 1:12-15

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news".

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • The early verses of Mark’s gospel herald the beginning of a totally new epoch of salvation (with the figure of John the Baptist poised before its threshold). Jesus is introduced onto the stage of history as the leader of God’s New People (Moses having been his forerunner).
  • But first (echoing the case of Moses) there comes a secluded communing while, in the wilderness, Jesus is taken into the care of heaven’s God. There, ‘tempted by Satan’, he comes through a testing totally unscathed.
  • Jesus is now ready to go into battle with the forces of darkness: urging the people to repent and to turn aside from all the darkness of the Evil One – as manifested in sin, in sickness, in demonic possession.

Conversation

Jesus, You are always there waiting for me.
Sometimes I get bogged down
with the concerns of this life.
Grant that I may be still more often.
To know Your peace, Your calm.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen
