Daily Prayer - 2018-02-12

Presence

"Be still and know that I am God".
Lord, may your spirit guide me to seek
Your Loving presence more and more.
For it is there I find rest and refreshment from this busy world.

Freedom

I will ask God's help,
to be free from my own preoccupations,
to be open to God in this time of prayer,
to come to know, love and serve God more.

Consciousness

Jesus, You are always there waiting for me.
Grant that I may be still more often.
That I may always desire to spend time in your presence.
To know Your peace, Your love.

The Word of God

Mark 8:11-13

The Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus, asking him for a sign from heaven, to test him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, "Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation." And he left them, and getting into the boat again, he went across to the other side.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • This exchange follows the account of Jesus miraculously feeding four thousand people. In the eyes of the Pharisees, he would perhaps now be poised to take up a role of popular political leadership. Were these Pharisees trying to test his intentions? Some dramatic, spectacular further ‘sign’ might now be seen as giving heaven’s testimony to such a venture. But Jesus was having none of it.
  • In fact, in a moment, he goes on to warn his disciples against the contagion of such worldly political thinking from any faction. The real significance of the feeding-miracle was simply as an aid to the crowds towards recognising in himself the surpassing source of all sustenance – especially sustenance for the Spirit.

Conversation

Jesus you speak to me through the words of the gospels.
May I respond to your call today.
Teach me to recognise your hand at work in my daily living.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen
