Daily Prayer - 2014-08-18

“Be still and know that I am God”
Lord, may your spirit guide me
to seek Your Loving presence
more and more. For it is there
I find rest and refreshment from
this busy world.

By God's grace I was born to live in freedom,
free to enjoy the pleasures He created for me.
Dear Lord, grant that I may live as you intended,
with complete confidence in your loving care.

Dear Jesus may I always be aware of your presence,
Your power and your Love,
all the days of my life.

The Word of God

Matthew 19:16-22

Then someone came to Jesus and said, "Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?" And he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments." He said to him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "You shall not murder; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; Honour your father and mother; also, you shall love your neighbour as yourself." The young man said to him, "I have kept all these; what do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • This is a frequently discussed gospel story and it is found in slightly different forms in the three synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke). One could interpret the reaction of the young man as raising the bar higher for himself until he was unable to respond to the invitation of Christ and had to go away sad. However, there is no doubt that the man had many possessions to which he was too attached to follow Jesus.
  • The parable invites us to ask ourselves:- what possessions of ours might be holding us back from following Christ in some ways?
  • Pray for the grace to see more clearly those things which are blocking me from giving myself fully to the service of Christ.

Do I notice myself reacting as I pray with the Word of God?
Do I feel challenged, comforted, angry?
Imagining Jesus sitting or standing by me,
I speak out my feelings, as one trusted friend to another.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.
