Daily Prayer - 2013-10-29

Presence

What is present to me is what has a hold on my becoming.
I reflect on the Presence of God always there in love,
amidst the many things that have a hold on me.
I pause and pray that I may let God
affect my becoming in this precise moment.

Freedom

Lord, I pray for your gift of freedom.
May your Holy Spirit
guide those in power to work for
equality for all your people.

Consciousness

I remind myself that I am in the presence of the Lord.
I will take refuge in His loving heart.
He is my strength in times of weakness.
He is my comforter in times of sorrow.

The Word of God

Luke 13:18-21

Jesus said, "What is the kingdom of God like? And to what should I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden; it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches." And again he said, "To what should I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • The kingdom of God is like a small seed that grew and became a large tree. The tree breathes in and out through its leaves and roots. Could I take a little time to breathe in and out, aware of the mysterious source of my life.
  • Think of the second image of the kingdom of God. “It is like the yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until it was all leavened.” How does that connect with me?
  • Could it be that the simplest acts of kindness and service that I have experienced from others are truly the kingdom of God growing in the world? And that the simplest acts of kindness and service that I have offered to others are truly the kingdom of God growing in my heart? The growth is slow and undramatic. The source of kindness and service is like the source of nature’s power – simple, humble and mysterious.

Conversation

Begin to talk to Jesus about the piece of scripture you have just read.
What part of it strikes a chord in you?
Perhaps the words of a friend - or some story you have heard recently -
will slowly rise to the surface of your consciousness.
If so, does the story throw light on what the scripture passage may be trying to say to you?

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
