Daily Prayer - 2013-10-29

Presence

When I come into your presence, O Lord,
I know I am in the presence of my Creator.
You created me out of Love.
You even know the amount of hairs on my head.
Your presence, O Lord, is the greatest of all.

Freedom

Lord, you created me to live in freedom.
Mostly I take this gift for granted.
Inspire me to live in the freedom you intended,
with a heart untroubled and with complete trust in You.

Consciousness

Lord you have called me ‘the light of the world’.
Let me be always conscious of those you want me to serve,
The hungry and the homeless,
The sick and the destitute,
The stranger and the refugee.

The Word of God

Luke 13:18-21

Jesus said, "What is the kingdom of God like? And to what should I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden; it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches." And again he said, "To what should I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus was so optimistic when he spoke of the Kingdom! For him even a small beginning was sufficient, for he was convinced that it is the Kingdom of God, so that it shares his power and dynamism. As I look around my world, I ask myself whether I share this conviction, or whether I find myself acting like a prophet of doom and gloom.
  • The yeast can only change the dough if it is one with it. Even if the separation is minimal, it will be ineffective. Engagement and presence rather than size seems to be what matters for Jesus. I pray for a Church and a Christian community that is totally engaged with and in the world, like the yeast in the dough.

Conversation

God’s Word is always fruitful.
How is it touching me now
As I reflect on what I have just prayed?
Do I feel comforted?
Do I feel challenged?

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
