Daily Prayer - 2013-07-10

Presence

Dear Lord as I come to you today
Fill my heart and my whole being
with the wonder of Your presence

Freedom

Lord, may I never take the gift of freedom for granted.
You gave me the great blessing of freedom of spirit.
Fill my spirit with Your peace and Your joy.

Consciousness

Life is busy Lord
Often my best intentions are left undone.
But I know that you are with me in all I say and do,
And in everyone I meet with daily.

The Word of God

Matthew 10:1-7

Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.'"

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Default
  • Jesus' choice of the Twelve is perhaps his most baffling decision. Could he not have made a better choice? Yet, at the end they were ready to obey his even more daring commission to take the Gospel to the whole world: he did make the right choice! The Gospel shows us the care he took to prepare them well for their mission.
  • He called them to him and sent them to others. We cannot be real disciples of Jesus without being also apostles to others. The mission is the same that Jesus received from the Father: Go and tell everyone the good news that the Kingdom of Heaven is near; bring healing to all who need it and get involved in the struggle against evil. I ask for the grace not to be deaf to the call to be a disciple and apostle.

Conversation

What is stirring in me as I pray?
Am I consoled, troubled, left cold?
I imagine Jesus himself standing or sitting at my side and share my feelings with him.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
