Daily Prayer - 2013-06-22

"Be still and know that I am God".
Lord, may your spirit guide me to seek
Your Loving presence more and more.
For it is there I find rest and refreshment from this busy world.

It is so easy to get caught up
with the trappings of wealth in this life.
Grant, O Lord, that I may be free
from greed and selfishness.
Remind me that the best things in life are free.
Love, laughter, caring and sharing.

My soul longs for your presence, Lord.
When I turn my thoughts to you,
I find peace and contentment.

The Word of God

Matthew 6:24-34

Jesus said, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you--you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?' For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. "So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • Today I can well follow Jesus' advice and look at the birds of the air and at the lilies of the fields. I reflect on the disaster that our selfish and wasteful greed is bringing on this our common home: if left alone these species flourish, when we intervene to grab for ourselves what belongs to all we endanger this beautiful balance. I ask pardon and pray for humanity to learn how to behave responsibly.
  • I can also look back at my experience of God's providence in my life. 'Do not worry. Today's trouble is enough for today'. I ask myself why I worry so much, and ask for the grace to trust God and his real love for me and the whole of humanity. I realise that this trust is not mere passivity, but implies the readiness to commit myself for the life of the world as a member of the Kingdom.

How has God's Word moved me?
Has it left me cold?
Has it consoled me or moved me to act in a new way?
I imagine Jesus standing or sitting beside me,
I turn and share my feelings with him.
