Daily Prayer - 2013-06-14

Dear Jesus, as I call on you today
I realise that I often come asking for favours.
Today I'd like just to be in your presence.
Let my heart respond to Your Love.

Lord, may I never take the gift of freedom for granted.
You gave me the great blessing of freedom of spirit.
Fill my spirit with Your peace and Your joy.

Help me Lord to be more conscious of your presence.
Teach me to recognise your presence in others.
Fill my heart with gratitude for the times Your love has been shown to me through the care of others.

The Word of God

Matthew 5:27-32

Jesus said to the crowds, "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell." 'It was also said, "Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce." But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • I am part of a big gathering of families sitting on a sunny hillside, enthused by the encouraging words Jesus has for the poor, the peace-makers, those concerned for justice.
  • Suddenly the tone changes. He has harsh words for those who undermine marriages and destroy families, through lustful glances, adultery, divorce. His image of ‘hell’ is Gehenna, the foul-smelling, smoking dump close to Jerusalem where refuse from the city was burned.
  • The word translated here as ‘unchastity’ probably refers to incestuous unions which were never valid and need to be dissolved.

Remembering that I am still in God's presence,
I imagine Jesus himself standing or sitting beside me,
and say whatever is on my mind, whatever is in my heart,
speaking as one friend to another.

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
