Daily Prayer - 2013-05-21

Dear Jesus, as I call on you today
I realise that I often come asking for favours.
Today I'd like just to be in your presence.
Let my heart respond to Your Love.

Dear Lord, instil in my heart
the desire to know and love you more.
May I respond to your will for my life.

In the presence of my loving Creator,
I look honestly at my feelings over the last day,
the highs, the lows and the level ground.
Can I see where the Lord has been present?

The Word of God

Mark 9:30-37

They went on from there and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again." But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the way?" But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all." Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • Jesus never deceives. He tells his disciples the truth about his Passion. The mystery of the Cross is set out starkly. He does not want them to get carried away by the image of a glorious Messiah, a wonder-worker. Jesus works at a much deeper level: he identifies with all victims of injustice across human history, and enters into solidarity with them, even at the cost of his life. This is the love that will break the stranglehold of evil. God is with the outcasts of the earth and will give them first place in his kingdom.
  • Lord, when suffering or betrayal come my way, let me offer them lovingly to you. Let me believe that my unavoidable sufferings, patiently and lovingly endured, play their part in the saving of the world.

What feelings are rising in me as I pray and reflect on God's Word?
I imagine Jesus himself sitting or standing near me and open my heart to him.

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
