Daily Prayer - 2013-04-26

"I stand at the door and knock," says the Lord.
What a wonderful privilege
that the Lord of all creation desires to come to me.
I welcome His presence.

Lord, guide me always
to do your holy will
knowing that your strength
will carry me through.

In the presence of my loving Creator, I look honestly at my feelings over the last day, the highs, the lows and the level ground. Can I see where the Lord has been present?

The Word of God

John 14:1-6

Jesus said to the disciples, 'Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.' Thomas said to him, 'Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?' Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • This is Jesus’ farewell discourse. He speaks with words of encouragement, kindness and promise to the disturbed disciples. There are no maps, no compasses, only Jesus. He promises to be the lodestar, the true guide. He will be our gateway into loving communion with the Father.
  • Jesus, inclusion is the nature of God. No one is blocked entry to his dwelling place. Inspired by you, may I be more open, more tolerant, more appreciative of difference. Let me trust that in the end all the rooms of God’s house will be full.

I begin to talk to Jesus about the piece of scripture I have just read.
What part of it strikes a chord in me? Perhaps the words of a friend - or some story I have heard recently - will slowly rise to the surface in my consciousness. If so, does the story throw light on what the scripture passage may be trying to say to me?

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

If you appreciated the daily prayer or have any suggestions or insights we will be glad to hear from you.
