Daily Prayer - 2013-04-26

Presence

To be present is to arrive as one is and open up to the other.
At this instant, as I arrive here, God is present waiting for me.
God always arrives before me, desiring to connect with me
even more than my most intimate friend.
I take a moment and greet my loving God.

Freedom

I try to let go of any prejudices and narrow mindedness
That may be clouding my vision at this present moment.
I hand them over to God’s merciful care,
So I can pray in freedom at this time.

Consciousness

As I spend this time with you, Lord,
I am aware of how blessed I truly am.
I think of the love and laughter in my life,
And I feel grateful.

The Word of God

John 14:1-6

Jesus said to the disciples, 'Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.' Thomas said to him, 'Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?' Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • When we hold on to negativity from hurts that were inflicted on us in the past, even if we were wronged and unjustly treated, we are letting ourselves be defined by what happened to us in the past rather than by what we choose to do now and in the future. This is a crucial choice that hugely determines the quality of our lives. Pray for the grace and wisdom to let go of negativity from past events and to choose to be defined by what you will do now and in the future.
  • Step into the scene of today's scripture, see Jesus with his closest friends as he breaks the news to them that He has only hours to live. See their shock and bewilderment and their anticipatory grief. He tries to console them stressing that the loss of His physical presence is not the end of life but that He will still be with them in a different form.
  • Jesuit mystic Theihard DeChardin was fond of reminding us, "We are spiritual beings having a human experience, not human beings having a spiritual experience." The spiritual embraces and transcends the human dimension of our lives. "Do you have a sense that your life includes and is more than your span of life on earth?"

Conversation

Jesus you speak to me through the words of the gospels.
May I respond to your call today.
Teach me to recognise your hand at work in my daily living.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
