Daily Prayer - 2013-04-24

Presence

Lord, help me to be fully alive to your Holy presence.
Enfold me in your love.
Let my heart become one with yours.

Freedom

By God's grace I was born to live in freedom,
free to enjoy the pleasures He created for me.
Dear Lord, grant that I may live as you intended,
with complete confidence in your loving care.

Consciousness

Dear Lord help me to be always
aware of the important things in life.
To care for those around me.
To seek your presence in all I meet.

The Word of God

John 12:44-50

Jesus cried aloud, 'Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness. I do not judge anyone who hears my words and does not keep them, for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not receive my word has a judge; on the last day the word that I have spoken will serve as judge, for I have not spoken on my own, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment about what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I speak, therefore, I speak just as the Father has told me.'

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus here is claiming to be much more than an upright moral teacher. He is saying that He is so tuned into God that there is nothing that He says or does that isn't God “The Father”, the source of existence expressing God self in and through Him. He is God's spokesperson. To entrust yourself to Him (to believe) is to entrust yourself to the Father. God the Father's will is that all people are saved (including creation).
  • So Jesus' will/mission is to save all people into their full potential which is to be like Him (by grace) – sons and daughters of God.
  • Who are you really? How awake are you to seeing yourself with Jesus as a son or daughter of God expressing God self in a unique irreplaceable way.

Conversation

I begin to talk to Jesus about the piece of scripture I have just read.
What part of it strikes a chord in me? Perhaps the words of a friend - or some story I have heard recently - will slowly rise to the surface in my consciousness. If so, does the story throw light on what the scripture passage may be trying to say to me?

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen
