Daily Prayer - 2013-04-01

Let my heart rejoice and be glad
in this time of prayer.
Remind me often of the great
blessings You have bestowed on me.

By God's grace I was born to live in freedom,
free to enjoy the pleasures He created for me.
Dear Lord, grant that I may live as you intended,
with complete confidence in your loving care.

Help me Lord to be more conscious of your presence.
Teach me to recognise your presence in others.
Fill my heart with gratitude for the times Your love has been shown to me through the care of others.

The Word of God

Matthew 28:8-15

So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them and said, ‘Greetings!’ And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.’
While they were going, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests everything that had happened. After the priests had assembled with the elders, they devised a plan to give a large sum of money to the soldiers, telling them, ‘You must say, “His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.” If this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.’ So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story is still told among the Jews to this day.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • This incident of the guards and the conspiracy is unique to Matthew. Why were the guards there at all? While the disciples of the Lord had no recollection of his saying that he would be put to death and would rise again, his enemies remembered this very well and so put guards the tomb to prevent his disciples stealing the body and proclaiming that he had risen.
  • What has given the Christian version the edge is not the meticulous historical work of scholars or the arguments of theologians but the fact that the proponents of the Christian version and their followers have been and still are prepared to die for that version. The witness of the Christian life lived to the full is the best apologetic for the Resurrection.

Sometimes I wonder what I might say if I were to meet you in person Lord.
I think I might say "Thank You Lord" for always being there for me.
I know with certainty there were times when you carried me, Lord.
When it was through your strength I got through the dark times in my life.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.
