Daily Prayer - 2013-03-08

Presence

My soul longs for your presence, Lord.
When I turn my thoughts to You,
I find peace and contentment.

Freedom

Lord grant me the grace
to have freedom of the spirit.
Cleanse my heart and soul
so I may live joyously in Your love.

Consciousness

Where do I sense hope, encouragement, and growth areas in my life?
By looking back over the last few months, I may be able to see which activities and occasions have produced rich fruit.
If I do notice such areas, I will determine to give those areas both time and space in the future.

The Word of God

Mark 12:28-34

One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, "Which commandment is the first of all?" Jesus answered, "The first is, 'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." Then the scribe said to him, "You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that 'he is one, and besides him there is no other'; and 'to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,' and 'to love one's neighbour as oneself,' --this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices." When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." After that no one dared to ask him any question.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Why with all our heart? Because that is the way the Lord loves us. Parents and grandparents have their children constantly on their minds. They are concerned for them even when they are separated geographically. You are ever in God’s mind.
  • To love God with all your heart is a daily challenge: remembering God, not only when in trouble, but every day. Prayer – of whatever kind – helps to keep God before our mind.
  • The second commandment: “you must love your neighbour as yourself” makes your love of God real. “Those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen.” (1 John 4:20)
  • Lord Jesus, keep teaching me to love.
