Daily Prayer - 2013-02-15

Presence

"Come to me all you who are burdened
and I will give you rest"
Here I am, Lord.
I come to seek Your presence.
I long for your healing power.

Freedom

"Leave me here freely all alone
In cell where never sunlight shone
should no one ever speak to me
This golden silence makes me free."
Part of a poem written by a prisoner at Dachau concentration camp

Consciousness

I remind myself that I am in the presence of the Lord.
I will take refuge in His loving heart.
He is my strength in times of weakness.
He is my comforter in times of sorrow.

The Word of God

Matthew 9:14-15

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?" And Jesus said to them, "The wedding guests cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • In so many Gospel interactions with Jesus, people are offered two distinct ‘messages’: we need to be equally open to both. Here, Jesus does warn that self-control and suffering (fasting) are indeed going to be part of the call for everybody.
  • But today again a reflex-response could stop us giving full value to the second ‘message’ here – namely: Jesus announces the close relationship which he has entered into with the human race, by becoming one of us – a marriage of heaven to earth: the adoption of us all into the heavenly kingdom.
  • The unsuspecting inquirers in the scene have not envisaged this larger horizon. But the ground has shifted under their feet: the newly-arrived kingdom-on-earth means – even though the two realities involved will come into conflict – that things can never be the same again.

Conversation

Jesus you speak to me through the words of the gospels.
May I respond to your call today.
Teach me to recognise your hand at work in my daily living.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
