Daily Prayer - 2012-10-06

May my heart rejoice in your love, O Lord.
Let me live each day anew.

I ask for the grace
to let go of my own concerns
and be open to what God is asking of me,
to let myself be guided and formed by my loving Creator.

Conscious of your presence, Lord,
I look over my recent past.
Let me be honest with myself about how I’ve been
And what I’ve done,
Because I know you love truth in the heart
And accept me just as I am.

The Word of God

Luke 10:17-24

The seventy returned with joy, saying, 'Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!' He said to them, 'I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.'
Jesus Rejoices At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, 'I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.'
Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said to them privately, 'Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.'

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • The seventy disciples return to Jesus delighted with themselves. Their mission to bring peace and reconciliation has overcome hatred and evil. But Jesus reminds the disciples that the power that is working in them is because of the love God has for them. Then he draws them into the circle of his divine origin: “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.”
  • It is in the sharing of our personalities and gifts that others are healed. And in our very acts of generosity we enter, often unaware, into the divinity of our human nature. I could dwell for a short time on some experience of being with a person or a group where I was a positive and helpful presence. How did I feel after the experience? Do I have a sense of my gifts having a source beyond me? Naming God as the source of all that I am may not come to me easily. I can ask for a deeper awareness of the mystery to whom I belong.

Sometimes I wonder what I might say if I were to meet you in person Lord.
I think I might say "Thank You Lord" for always being there for me.
I know with certainty there were times when you carried me, Lord.
When it was through your strength I got through the dark times in my life.

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
