Daily Prayer - 2012-10-05

Presence

I remind myself that I am in your presence O Lord.
I will take refuge in your loving heart.
You are my strength in times of weakness.
You are my comforter in times of sorrow.

Freedom

Lord I ask for the grace to know
That doing your will is a joy
Because your will is my deepest desire
And you are always willing what is best for me.

Consciousness

Where do I sense hope, encouragement, and growth areas in my life?
By looking back over the last few months, I may be able to see which activities and occasions have produced rich fruit.
If I do notice such areas, I will determine to give those areas both time and space in the future.

The Word of God

Luke 10:13-16

Jesus said to his disciples, "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But at the judgment it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades. "Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus berates the people for not recognising him and listening to him, poising retribution to those who do not listen to those sent by Jesus. He singles out especially those who were privileged to observe his deeds.
  • We recognise that if the best of human and religious values are ignored and trampled upon we, as individuals and as cultures, are not in a good place. Jesus speaks harshly to make the point that he cannot bear wilful corruption of any kind.
  • Could this gospel be asking me to review my moral compass? Could it be asking us: who sets the boundaries between what is a good and what is a bad way to live? Where do I look to find the boundaries that can truly free me?

Conversation

Jesus often asked questions of those who came to him.
Let me sense him close to me now,
Listening to my prayer and asking
‘How can I help you?’
‘What can I give you?’

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
