John 21:18-19

Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.’ (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, ‘Follow me.’

    • The disciples were familiar with the gossip about Jesus. Jesus leads them to put aside external voices. The only question for me is, “who do I say Jesus is?” as I put aside gossip and other opinions.

    • The inspiration and hope that I receive in my prayer comes from God. I think of Jesus congratulating Peter and listen to him say to me, 'Blessed are you!'
    • Peter's faith was the solid foundation that Jesus appreciated. Jesus values my faith to and wants to build on it for my happiness, for the service of others and for the glory of God.

    • Many people were still confused about Jesus, this son of a carpenter. Peter is brave and impetuous, and speaks out his belief. This brings Jesus great joy. Someone believes in him! He responds with a set of immense promises.
    • The Christian community as such will not be overcome by evil. The community will also have a special understanding of God’s loving intentions for the world. Do I know my faith well? How can I develop it?

    • In his life on earth, Jesus was the subject of much gossip and speculation. One day he asks his disciples what people were saying about him. But it isn’t just curiosity that makes him ask: he wants to make his true self known. His is the human face of God!
    • He then asks them one of the most important questions in the whole gospels: ‘Who do you say that I am?’ He is happy when we come to know his true identity. Lord, help me to know you better!

    • In yesterday's reading the Nazarenes were despising Jesus as a carpenter. Today he speaks as a builder, seeking a solid base for his construction. He knows his man: Peter is loving, impulsive, generous and in his own way, weak. Jesus is to build his church, the community that carries on his work, on such people, who do their best but trust more in God's strength than their own.
    • Here I am, Lord. It is only your power that gives me the courage to carry on your work.

    • Jesus saw that Peter was often impetuous, led by his energy and enthusiasm. Jesus cautions him against being formed by unthinking habits and invites him instead to remain in relationship, saying to him as he says to me, ‘Follow me.’
