Matthew 2:1-12

The Word of God

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 'And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.'

    • The treasures carried by the men from the east did not make them proud; they remained humble, with hearts and hands open. Help me, Lord, to hold lightly the gifts I carry and to share them generously for your glory.
    • Life is sometimes full of questions, seeking and searching. I pray that I may always seek the truth and that I might recognise it when God puts it in my path.

    • The wise men stand for all who are ready to break out of their routine and comfort zone and go in search of what they yearn for. The insignificance of the baby in the crib can draw us on more powerfully even than the majestic night sky.
    • From every corner of our bustling planet Earth We are drawn to you, Saviour and Lord, brother and companion, who touch with the healing power of love even the least valued of God’s children.

    • The Magi, three pilgrim astrologers of the East, follow a star in search of the divine. God chooses to reveal himself to outsiders, strangers, and foreigners. I learn that in the kingdom of God there are no outsiders, nor any discrimination. The Magi are filled with immense joy by finding Jesus.
    • The wise men saw the star and steadily followed it. The people in Jerusalem did not. What star am I being called to follow this year? What gifts from my treasure chest will I offer him in service of his mission? Lord, send me out each day to be a bearer of your love to all whom I encounter.

    • Herod was interested in Jesus in an intellectual way, careful that his own position not be affected. I pray for people who keep Jesus at a distance, referring to him as an idea. I realise that my prayer draws me into a relationship and ask that I be ready to accept the consequences that may come to light.
    • The comfortable and established did not recognise Jesus but the travellers and strangers appreciated who he was. I ask that I be open to the voices of the stranger and to wisdom from other traditions.
