Mark 4:21-25

The Word of God

He said to them, ‘Is a lamp brought in to be put under the bushel basket, or under the bed, and not on the lampstand? For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. Let anyone with ears to hear listen!’ And he said to them, ‘Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. For to those who have, more will be given; and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.’

    • Jesus' saying about ‘the measure you give' seems like a variation on ‘you only get as good as you give.' What Jesus means is that the person who seeks to gain some spiritual insight into what he is saying will have that insight increased by exposure to his parables, whereas whoever does not listen to Jesus will end up in spiritual ignorance.
    • In listening, hearing and following Jesus, I grow in familiarity with his voice and hear more as to what I have, more is added. I give thanks and I pray for those who have nothing, that they might take time with God who has such time for them.

    • The light about which Jesus speaks is not a searchlight to expose, shame or embarrass. When the light of Truth is let shine, all is understood and forgiven. I have no need to hide.
    • "Pay attention to what you hear." O God, I give you this time that you may speak to me. Help me to notice your word among all the signals I receive. Bless me that I may pay attention and to receive it in my heart.

    • ‘To those who have, more will be given’. Lord, help me to see how much you give me. Let me see you as a lavish God who never holds back anything that might help me.
    • Jesus, help me to be as generous as you are. I want to serve you beyond comfort and an easy life. I want to continue to give beyond moments of laziness and discouragement.

    • “Listen!” “Pay attention!” Who does Jesus think I am? He knows that it is easy for people to become inattentive even to the very things that bring them life. I take this time to be attuned to my life and circumstances, listening for what God is saying to me.
