John 1:29-34

The Word of God

The next day he saw Jesus coming towards him and declared, ‘Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, “After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.’ And John testified, ‘I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, “He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.’

    • Lamb of God stirs biblical overtones: of the Passover lamb, and of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah, led like a lamb to the slaughter, bearing our sins.
    • Lord, whenever I hear of some atrocious barbarisms by one of our race, and of the injustice and pain which people suffer through others’ wickedness, I remember that this is the world you entered, the burden you took on yourself. You had a strong back to carry the evil that is in the world.

    • The witness of John the Baptist depended on what was revealed to him in his prayer and on what he saw with his eyes. Bless me now, Lord, to recognise more clearly where you are moving in my life.
    • Jesus came to take away sin, yet I sometimes hang on to guilt, and won't let the past go. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on me!

    • The weak and tender child in Mary’s arms stands against all corrupt practices, oppression, hurtful gossip and slander. In his gentle forgiving way he breaks down the hardness of our hearts. In the touch of his Spirit in baptism he heals us and makes us free.
    • Loving God, you cut through the mesh of self-interest that entangles us. You free us from our dark tendencies and feelings. Open us up to the life you want for us so that we can reach out to others and help to free them from their burdens.

    • John’s mission has reached its completion. His function was to point people in the direction of Jesus, the Lamb of God. With these words John draws back the curtain and Jesus takes centre stage in our human story, inviting us to be with him.
    • John knew who Jesus is, but what Jesus is was suddenly revealed. He sees the Spirit descend and remain on Jesus. The Spirit takes up permanent abode in him. As I move through today can I be aware that my life is pervaded with the Spirit of God?

    • Although he prepared the way for Jesus, John acknowledges that he did not know who to expect. As I do my best, in my way, to prepare the way for Jesus, I cannot always know just what to be ready for
    • John remained active and vigilant. I pray that I may find the balance between keeping occupied in God’s service without letting my occupations overwhelm me.
